This small village sits along the River Stour in southern Warwickshire, right at the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
It's genuinely quiet here, with stone cottages dotted along peaceful lanes and the river providing a constant, gentle presence to everyday village life.
The centre revolves around the church and a few local amenities, but the real draw is the surrounding landscape. The river walks are genuinely excellent for a good stretch, offering pleasant routes through countryside that feels properly unspoiled. You're more likely to encounter sheep than other people, which rather tells you what you're getting into.
Preston-on-Stour works well as a base for exploring more widely. Shipston-on-Stour, a proper market town with shops and restaurants, sits just a few miles away. Stratford-upon-Avon, well-known for Shakespeare and with proper visitor facilities, lies about fifteen miles north. The village itself appeals most to people who want to experience the Cotswolds at a slower pace, away from the main tourist crowds.
The setting is particularly lovely during spring and early summer when the riverside walks are at their best. This is a place where the entire point is to do very little, which suits many visitors perfectly if what you're after is genuine peace rather than organised attractions.
