River Stour, Shipston on Stour The name Shipston is a derivation of Sheepwashtown, a saxon settlement by a ford that was used as a sheep wash. There is no ford here now, but this old bridge carries the B4035 to Banbury over the river.

Shipston-on-Stour is a working market town of around 5,800 people that sits along the River Stour in southern Warwickshire, positioned conveniently between Stratford-upon-Avon and the Oxfordshire countryside.

What makes it appealing is that it functions as a genuine community rather than a tourist destination, so you get a real sense of how people actually live here. The independent shops and local character reflect the town's long history along the river, and there's a relaxed atmosphere that comes from not being overwhelmed by visitors.

The location itself is one of the main reasons to spend time here. It works well as a base for exploring the Vale of Red Horse and makes it straightforward to venture into the rolling landscapes that spread across the borders of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. You can explore the riverside walks, get to know the town's layout through its varied architecture, and use it as a starting point for countryside drives and walks in any direction. The River Stour runs through the heart of things and has shaped the town's development over centuries. If you're planning to spend time in the southern Cotswolds without staying in the more crowded market towns, Shipston-on-Stour gives you good access to everything while maintaining its own distinct, unhurried character.
