Naunton sits in a quiet valley alongside the River Windrush, about six miles west of Stow-on-the-Wold.
This is genuinely the kind of place where you can hear yourself think, which makes it ideal if you're looking to escape the crowds that gather at busier tourist spots.
The village curves gently around the river, with stone cottages and a working mill that's been here for centuries. There's a pub serving decent food and local ales, making it a natural stopping point if you're out walking. The surrounding countryside is lovely for exploration on foot, with riverside paths that wind through meadows full of wildflowers. If you're patient, you might spot herons or kingfishers along the water.
The mill was historically vital to the area's economy, processing grain for local use. The village has retained its medieval character while obviously receiving the updates needed for modern living.
What sets Naunton apart is that it doesn't feel designed for tourists. It's a functioning village where people actually live and work, giving you a genuine sense of how Cotswold life operates away from the better-known spots like Bourton-on-the-Water. The river walk to neighbouring villages keeps you connected to more facilities while maintaining that peaceful atmosphere that makes the area special.
