This small hamlet sits along the Stroudwater Navigation, an eighteenth-century canal that once connected Stroud to the River Severn.

The waterway was a major achievement of its time, opening in 1779 with twelve locks managing a significant change in elevation across its eight-mile length. Coal formed the backbone of its cargo, though it also carried other goods that helped drive the local economy for nearly two centuries.

Today, Westfield offers a quiet vantage point for understanding this industrial heritage. You can walk the towpath and observe the locks that still define the landscape, getting a real sense of the engineering involved in canal transport. The waterway itself, despite periods of decline, tells the story of how commerce shaped the Cotswolds during the Georgian and Victorian eras. The canal eventually fell victim to changing trade routes and the rise of railways, with commercial use ending in 1954.

The hamlet sits within easy reach of Stroud, a vibrant market town that makes a good base for exploring the area. The Stroudwater Navigation Trail offers several access points if you want to explore different sections of the canal. It's worthwhile for anyone interested in industrial history or simply wanting to walk a historically significant route through rural Gloucestershire.
