This small village perches on exposed high ground about eight miles east of Cheltenham, which is why locals have long called it Cold Salperton.
It's genuinely a working agricultural community rather than a tourist destination, and that's precisely what makes it worth visiting if you want to understand how the Cotswolds actually function beyond the busy, well-trodden villages.
The settlement consists of a handful of stone buildings arranged around the central area, characteristic of the region, with open countryside spreading out in every direction. You get a real sense of being in proper farming territory here. The village itself is deliberately modest — there are no shops or cafes within Salperton, and that's entirely intentional. It offers an authentic feel for rural Cotswold life without drawing crowds.
Walking is what brings most people here. The surrounding landscape provides excellent rambling through rolling fields and country lanes, and you'll encounter far fewer visitors than in other parts of the area. The hilltop position gives you particularly rewarding views across the valleys when the weather is clear.
You'll need to travel west to Cheltenham or to the larger villages dotted throughout the Cotswolds for meals and supplies. But if you're looking for genuine peace and quiet with real countryside character, Salperton delivers exactly that. It's absolutely worth exploring if you're venturing into the quieter eastern stretches of the region.
