This spot near Salperton shows where the Romans established a military camp, evidence of their significant presence across this part of the Cotswolds.
You won't find dramatic stone walls or decorated mosaics here—instead, the appeal lies in the earthworks that outline what was once a Roman fortification. Walking across the site, you can trace the boundaries where soldiers lived and worked, getting a real sense of how these camps functioned as bases for Roman control and movement through the landscape.
It's a contemplative kind of visit. As you follow the contours of the land, you start to feel the strategic importance of the place and imagine the daily routines of the people stationed here. The Romans built these camps as they pushed through Britain, and understanding their layout tells you something about how they organized and defended their territory.
Salperton village is right nearby, and just a short drive away is Northleach, a proper market town with good pubs and cafes where you can grab food and drink. Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold are also close enough to visit the same day, so this works well as a historical detour while you're exploring the wider Cotswolds.
