Welland is the sort of village you come to for a slower kind of day: a scatter of houses and lanes with open countryside on every side, and enough within a couple of miles to fill an afternoon without ever needing to rush. It suits walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and anyone who likes a pub lunch that comes with a proper view, and it works just as well as a base for a longer stay as it does for a single day out.

A good few hours might begin at St. Wulstan's Local Nature Reserve, where the paths loop through grassland, scrub and water, then continue to Hollybed Farm Meadows for old pasture that repays a slow walk in early summer.
