Holt sits in the quieter country between Bradford on Avon, Melksham and Trowbridge, and it rewards visitors who like their days unhurried. It's a small place with a surprising amount within reach: count roughly two miles in any direction and you'll find eleven places to eat and drink, three places to stay, three to visit, a couple of activity providers and a village shop. That balance tells you something about the area. There's enough to fill a day without any of the queuing or car park hunting you'd meet closer to the honeypot towns, and enough farmland and lane-walking in between to make the gaps feel like part of the trip rather than dead time.

A good few hours here might start at Great Chalfield Manor, the moated fifteenth-century house just west of the village, then continue with lunch at Wild Herb at The Field Kitchen or a longer sit-down at The Toll Gate. If the weather turns, the Lion and Fiddle is a reliable afternoon fallback. Those staying over will find Copse Farm Camping handy for an early start the next morning.
