Derry Hill sits in that quiet stretch of north Wiltshire where the villages are small and the lanes between them are worth taking slowly. It isn't a place that asks much of you: there's no high street to work through, no queue for a ticket desk. What you'll find within about two miles is a compact spread of options — eight places to eat and drink, five to visit, a couple of everyday services and one spot for something more active — which is plenty when you'd rather linger over one or two things than tick off a list. It suits an afternoon detour, a walk with a pub at the end of it, or a slow start before you head on towards Calne or Chippenham.

A good few hours might begin with coffee and something warm at the Bowood Treehouse Cafe, then a wander in the direction of Cocklemore Brook or Webb's Patch, depending on how much ground you feel like covering.
