around Charlbury

Charlbury sits on the edge of the Evenlode valley, a small Oxfordshire town with a railway station, a working high street and countryside starting more or less where the houses stop. It's the sort of place you can arrive at without a car and spend a day quite happily, because almost everything worth your time is within a couple of miles. In that radius you'll find eight places to eat and drink, three to visit, two spots for walking and outdoor activity, one shop and somewhere to stay, which tells you something about how the town works: it's more about long lunches and long walks than ticking off attractions.

A good few hours might start at Charlbury Museum, which is small and run with real local knowledge, and gives you the background to the streets you're about to wander. From there you can pick up the Wychwood Way, or head out to Blenheim Farm Nature Reserve for a gentler loop through grassland and scrub. Come back into town for a proper sit-down at The Bull, or a pint in the low-beamed rooms of Ye Olde Three Horseshoes. If you'd rather stay the night, Cotswold View is close by.
