Charlbury is a working market town in north Oxfordshire that sits on the Cotswold Line between Oxford and Worcester.

It's the kind of place where you can spend a proper afternoon wandering without feeling like you're in a theme park version of the Cotswolds.

The town centres around a traditional high street with independent shops, cafes, and pubs that locals genuinely use day to day. St Mary the Virgin Church is worth exploring if medieval architecture interests you, and the town has real historical significance from the English Civil War period. The surrounding countryside offers excellent walking opportunities, with several good trails leading towards Wychwood Forest, which features ancient woodland and views across the valley.

The railway station is a real advantage if you're travelling without a car. You can reach Charlbury in about half an hour from Oxford by train, and it sits roughly between Witney and Chipping Norton if you're navigating by those larger towns. The community here is active and engaged, so depending on when you visit, you'll often find local events and farmers markets happening.

What makes Charlbury different is how refreshingly unpretentious it feels. You get a genuine sense of how the Cotswolds actually function as a living region rather than existing primarily as a tourist destination. It's a place where real life carries on alongside visitors, which gives it a different character from the more obviously polished towns nearby.
