This working market town sits in the Oxfordshire part of the Cotswolds, about fifteen miles west of Oxford.

Witney has been important for centuries because of its position on the River Windrey, and it became particularly famous for blanket manufacturing during the medieval and industrial periods. That heritage still shapes the place today.

The town center has real momentum to it rather than feeling like a museum piece. You'll find the impressive Butter Cross at the heart of things, a covered market structure from the eighteenth century, where locals still gather and shop. The Church of St Mary deserves a visit for its striking tower and interior, while Cogges Manor Farm Museum gives you a sense of agricultural life through different periods with working demonstrations and period rooms.

As you explore, you'll notice the golden-hued stone buildings characteristic of the region, alongside more contemporary structures. There are proper independent shops, bakeries, and cafes serving real lunch rather than tourist trinkets. The riverside walks offer greenery without requiring you to leave town facilities behind.

Witney works well as a base for the broader Cotswolds. You can reach it easily from Oxford or Cheltenham, and nearby villages like Minster Lovell are within walking distance or a short drive. It's somewhere that repays taking your time rather than rushing through.
