Spelsbury is a village of around 2,830 people in the Evenlode valley, about six miles north of Witney, positioned where the Cotswolds meet Wychwood Forest.

It's the kind of place where you'll actually encounter village life rather than just passing through on the way to somewhere else.

The settlement revolves around its green and church, which tells you a lot about how communities like this developed over time. Wychwood Forest is right on the doorstep, offering serious walking through ancient woodland, while the valley itself has plenty of gentle routes suitable for exploring on foot or by bike. The River Evenlode runs through the area too, adding another reason to get out and wander.

What makes it work well is that it's close enough to reach easily from places like Witney but far enough from the main tourist circuits that it hasn't been swamped with visitors. You'll find local pubs where locals actually spend time, and the countryside around it is genuinely walkable—not just scenery to look at from a distance. The stone cottages and gardens have authentic Cotswold character without feeling staged for visitors.

If you're based in Witney, it's a straightforward journey up the valley. It also works well as a base for exploring both the forest and the wider Cotswolds while sidestepping the busier market towns. You get a real sense of how people actually live here rather than how the area has been packaged for tourism.
