Bishops Cannings sits in that quiet stretch of Wiltshire where the downs roll up behind the village and the low ground opens out towards Devizes. It's a small place, and that's rather the point: you come here for lanes, long views and the sense that the countryside starts the moment you park. Within a couple of miles you'll find four places to walk, ride or get out on the water, four spots to eat and drink, one visitor attraction and one local service, so it works well either as a base for a day of gentle exploring or as a detour on a longer Wiltshire route.
A good few hours might begin on foot, following a section of the Wiltshire Way as it threads through fields and past the edge of the village, before dropping down to Devizes Marina to watch the boats shuffle about and stop for coffee and something warm at the Marina Café. From there it's an easy step to The Bridge Inn for a proper sit-down lunch, or you can save your appetite for the Crown Inn and a slower afternoon closer to home.
