This long-distance walking trail takes you through the heart of Wiltshire's downland, connecting the county's most famous chalk hill figures – those striking white horses carved into the hillsides over the centuries.
Some of these equine figures date back millennia, while others are relatively recent additions to the landscape. What makes them special isn't just their presence; locals take genuine pride in maintaining them, regularly scouring the chalk to keep them bright white and visible from miles around.
The trail is wonderfully flexible. You can walk just a section for an afternoon ramble or commit to a multi-day adventure, depending on what suits you. Either way, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views across rolling fields and expansive skies – the kind of open countryside that really defines this part of England.
Devizes, a proper market town a short distance away, makes an ideal base for exploring the trail. It's well-positioned to access various starting points, and the town itself is worth lingering in. You'll find a historic canal running through it, independent shops worth browsing, and plenty of good pubs where locals gather. It's the perfect setup if you want to combine a day's walking with some genuine town atmosphere and a bit of local history on the side.
