Apperley is a small village on the edge of the Cotswolds, the kind of place you come to for quiet lanes, big skies and a slower pace rather than a busy high street. Within a couple of miles you'll find four places to eat and drink, three to visit, two to stay and one useful local service — enough to fill a day without ever feeling rushed or hemmed in. It suits walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and anyone who likes their sightseeing spread across open countryside, with a pub lunch waiting at the end of it.

A good few hours here might start at Coombe Hill Nature Reserve, where the paths and open water reward an unhurried pace and a pair of binoculars. From there, Coombe Hill Farm Shop is the obvious stop for something to take home or eat on the spot. Add a look at Apperley Court or Wightfield Manor as you pass, then finish at The Coalhouse Inn, which is well placed for a long, late lunch.
