If you're exploring the northern edge of the Cotswolds, the Apostles Garden in Ilmington is worth carving out time for.
This thoughtfully designed garden takes its name from its most striking feature: twelve meticulously clipped yew trees arranged around a central sundial, each one representing an Apostle. It's the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and take in the detail.
Beyond those distinctive yews, there's plenty to see as you wander through the grounds. The herbaceous borders shift through the seasons with colour, there's a productive potager garden, elegant pleached lime trees that form living green walls, and a small arboretum if you're interested in trees. A gentle stream runs through parts of the property, adding to the overall sense of calm. What really strikes you is the level of horticultural skill on display throughout.
The village of Ilmington itself is a proper Cotswolds settlement, so you can easily combine a garden visit with a wander round the village or a pub lunch. You're also well positioned for reaching Shipston-on-Stour and the historic charm of Chipping Campden if you want to explore further. Do check opening times before you visit, as this remains a private garden that opens only on selected days, usually for charity purposes.
