in Brighthampton

This walking route follows the River Windrush as it winds through the countryside, offering a gentler alternative to some of the more strenuous terrain found elsewhere in the Cotswolds.

1.6 km

The path takes you through open water meadows and fields where the river sets a peaceful rhythm to your walk, making it a good spot for spotting local birdlife or simply enjoying the quieter rural landscape away from busier areas.

The Windrush itself carries industrial heritage. For centuries, mills lined its banks, harnessing the water's power to drive their operations. Though not all remain standing along this stretch, the walk still reveals traces of the working landscape that once defined this part of England. You may notice old footbridges or subtle remnants of agricultural activity that hint at how people lived and worked here.

The route works well as a half or full day outing, with Ducklington village providing a convenient starting or finishing point. The nearby market town of Witney, just a short distance away, makes a logical place for lunch or a coffee break, or simply somewhere to explore further once you've finished walking. The terrain is accessible and the pace entirely up to you, making this an ideal choice if you want to experience the Cotswolds in a more relaxed manner.
