This 14th-century pub sits at the centre of Ascott-under-Wychwood, a village positioned where the ancient Wychwood Forest meets the open Cotswolds.

The building started life as a guesthouse for monks from Bruern Abbey before becoming a coaching inn, and it still carries those centuries visibly—thick stone walls, timber beams, and a hearth that's regularly lit when the weather turns cold.

The Shaven Crown works well whether you're stopping for an hour or settling in for the night. The food is honest pub fare, backed up by locally-kept ales and coffee, and there are bedrooms upstairs if you want to use the place as a base rather than just passing through. It's the sort of inn where the character feels earned rather than manufactured, simply a result of having stood here for so long and been looked after properly.

Ascott-under-Wychwood itself rewards a bit of exploration, and you're well-positioned for reaching other places—Charlbury is nearby with its railway station, while Burford, the larger market town, is just a short drive away. This is the kind of spot where you can settle in with a drink, feel the weight of history without any fuss about it, and take stock before moving on.
