This traditional stone pub sits right on Castle Combe's main street beside the market cross, very much a proper local where villagers and visitors come together for a drink and straightforward food.
The building itself embodies the Cotswolds architecture that gives the area its distinctive character.
Castle Combe is somewhere you should really spend time exploring. The village has managed to preserve its medieval layout almost entirely, with a wide main street lined by period buildings in local stone. The wool and cloth trade brought wealth here in earlier centuries, and that prosperity is evident in the quality of construction all around you. The village has featured in various films and television productions over the years, which has certainly raised its profile.
The Salutation works well as a base for getting to know the place. You can easily walk around the village from here, and if you want to venture further, there are several good walking routes through the surrounding countryside. It's a natural spot to pause and take stock while you're absorbing it all.
If you're planning a bigger day out, Chippenham lies to the southwest and Corsham to the south, both easily reached by car. Either makes a natural pairing with Castle Combe if you want to see more of what this part of the Cotswolds offers.
