Standlake sits between Oxford and Witney, about five miles southeast of the latter, with around 1,500 residents.
It's that sweet spot where you get genuine peace and quiet but still have proper shops and a pub, plus the kind of community that actually functions as one.
The River Windrush flows past the village and marks much of the parish boundary, which makes it genuinely worth exploring on foot. The walking is straightforward Oxfordshire countryside—good paths through farmland and along the water. If you fancy stretching your legs further, Brighthampton, a small hamlet within the parish, gives you more ground to cover.
What strikes most visitors is that this is a place people actually live in rather than somewhere designed for tourism. That working character means it feels real. You'll find locals in the pub and actual shoppers in the shop, not performances of village life.
The parish boundaries themselves have an interesting history. They shifted and were disputed over centuries before finally settling down when Brighthampton Cut, an artificial drainage channel, was dug in the nineteenth century. If you're into local history, those boundaries tell quite a story.
Being so close to Oxford makes Standlake a sensible base for exploring both the university city and the broader Cotswolds. You're within easy reach of everything but far enough out that you can actually find some countryside without fighting the crowds that gather nearer town.
