Saint Leonard in Coln St Dennis is a church that genuinely rewards taking your time over it.

What makes it special is the sheer architectural layering you can see—different centuries of building and rebuilding all present in one space, each period leaving its mark. The Saxon chancel arch is particularly striking, a genuine rarity that commands attention the moment you step inside. You'll spot Norman work too, especially in the north arcade, which tells you a lot about how the building evolved over time. The medieval wall paintings are faint now, but they're still there if you look carefully, and they give you a real sense of how people filled their churches with colour and devotion centuries ago.

There's a genuinely peaceful atmosphere throughout. It's the kind of place where you can actually linger and absorb things without feeling rushed, taking in both the historical layers and the quiet craftsmanship that went into building it all.

You're well positioned here in the Coln Valley. Bibury with its famous Arlington Row is very close by, and it's not far to Fairford if you want to visit another impressive church, or to Northleach if you need somewhere to stop for lunch. You can explore this stretch of the valley comfortably on foot or by car, and this church is absolutely worth making time for while you're in the area.
