A Tudor hunting lodge built in the 1540s for Sir Nicholas Poyntz, four storeys and startlingly symmetrical, remodelled into a square Georgian house by James Wyatt around 1790.
The grounds run out towards the Severn Vale, and footpaths link the house into longer walks — the seven-and-a-half-mile circular from Wotton-under-Edge through Tyley Bottom and Ozleworth passes through the estate.
Getting here needs care. The Trust’s own advice is not to use a SatNav, because it will send you up a very steep single-track lane; follow the brown signs from the Wotton-under-Edge mini-roundabout instead. Parking is charged, which is unusual for a National Trust site.
