Right in the heart of Bourton-on-the-Water, High Bridge spans the River Windrush at one of the village's main crossings, connecting the two sides of the central thoroughfare.
Despite its grand name, it's actually quite modest in height, but its role as a significant crossing point in the village's layout earned it that designation.
This is one of Bourton's liveliest spots. The area around the bridge fills with independent shops, cafes, and small eateries that line the riverbanks and adjacent streets, making it ideal for browsing unique gifts, local crafts, or picking up souvenirs. It's worth pausing on the bridge itself to watch the water flow past and spot ducks enjoying themselves. From here you're just a few steps from other attractions like the Model Village or Birdland.
Bourton-on-the-Water owes much of its character to its series of low bridges spanning the Windrush, which sets the village apart elsewhere in the Cotswolds. Most of the architecture is built from honey-coloured stone dating back centuries, creating a genuinely timeless feel. The village offers plenty of spots for coffee or a traditional cream tea once you've finished exploring. If you're staying longer, nearby Stow-on-the-Wold and Burford are just short drives away and worth investigating for further Cotswold discoveries.
