Church Enstone sits in the Evenlode valley about four and a half miles south of Chipping Norton, making it a genuinely peaceful spot if you're looking to explore the quieter side of the Cotswolds.
With around 560 residents, it's properly small—so small that you won't find shops or cafes here. For those, Chipping Norton is your nearest option.
What makes this place worth visiting is the landscape itself. The village clusters around its church and a scatter of cottages, giving you an honest feel for how rural Oxfordshire actually functions. The real draw is getting out into the surrounding countryside without fighting crowds. The Evenlode River runs through the valley, and the gentle rolling hills are excellent for walking. You can easily loop out toward Wychwood Forest or pick up the broader footpath networks that connect you to villages across the area.
This has always been farming country, and that character remains woven into everything you see. The terrain is ideal for unhurried rambles where the point is simply to slow down and breathe rather than chase specific attractions. If you're staying in Chipping Norton or Bourton-on-the-Water and want a quiet village walk without going far afield, heading into this valley is absolutely worth the effort.
