Around 15,000 trees from across the world make up this significant arboretum, one of the most important collections of its kind globally.
Forestry England manages the site, which works equally well whether you're planning a couple of hours or settling in for the day. It's genuinely rewarding for anyone who enjoys being outdoors, whether you're a keen botanist or just looking for a family outing.
The grounds divide into distinct areas, each with its own feel. The Old Arboretum features grand mature specimens chosen for their visual impact, perfect if you want a straightforward walk among impressive trees. Silk Wood takes a different approach, offering a more natural woodland setting that prioritizes conservation. The real highlight is the treetop walkway, which lets you move through the canopy and see the trees and landscape from angles you wouldn't get from ground level.
The site looks completely different depending on when you visit. Spring brings vivid blossoms and rhododendrons, while autumn is spectacular, particularly from the celebrated Japanese maples. The changing seasons really shape how the whole place feels.
Robert Stayner Holford established this collection in the mid-19th century, and it's evolved into a world leader in tree management and conservation. You'll find it conveniently close to the market towns of Tetbury and Malmesbury in southern Cotswolds, so it's easy to combine with other local attractions. There's a visitor centre, cafe, and shop on site.
