One of the world's most important tree collections awaits you at Westonbirt, where you can walk among species that rarely appear elsewhere in the region.

The main attraction for most visitors is the Dawn redwood, a tree with a remarkable history. Botanists believed it had been extinct for millions of years, known only through fossils, until they rediscovered living specimens in a remote Chinese region during the 1940s. Standing beneath one here creates an almost surreal experience, as though you've stepped back into prehistoric times.

What makes these conifers particularly striking is that they're deciduous—they shed their needles each autumn in a brilliant russet display before becoming completely bare. It's quite unlike the evergreens you might expect from a conifer. The arboretum itself is well maintained with accessible paths suitable for most visitors, and a treetop walkway offers a different perspective if you want to climb up into the canopy. You could easily spend several hours simply exploring, observing the enormous scale of the trees and how they transform across the seasons.

Tetbury and Malmesbury are both nearby and worth combining with your visit here. Just a short drive away, each town has genuine character with excellent places to eat and plenty more to discover if you're keen to make a full day of it.
