You'll find thousands of tree species from around the world spread across this sprawling collection, managed by Forestry England as both a living museum and a working conservation centre.
The landscape transforms dramatically through the seasons – brilliant autumn foliage, vibrant spring growth, and the striking bare branches of winter all have their own appeal.
The site divides into two main areas: the more structured Old Arboretum and the looser, wilder Silk Wood. Walking through either rewards you with hours of exploration along well-signposted paths, and there's a treetop walkway that lets you experience the canopy from above. Look out for standout specimens like the Incense Cedars, which are immediately recognizable by their ridged bark and fragrant scent.
The arboretum began developing in the early 1800s and has grown into the internationally significant site you see today. It works well as a peaceful solo walk, a family day out, or simply a chance to deepen your knowledge of trees and woodland ecology. The café and shop on site mean you can stay as long as you'd like without worrying about provisions.
Getting here is straightforward – it sits just a short drive from Tetbury, with easy access too from Malmesbury or Cirencester if you're exploring that part of the Cotswolds.
