This small hamlet sits in the chalk downs between Marlborough and Avebury in Wiltshire, right at the edge of Cotswolds territory.

The main reason to come here is West Kennett Long Barrow, one of southern England's most remarkable prehistoric monuments and genuinely worth your time if ancient history interests you.

Built around 3650 BC, this Neolithic burial chamber belongs to the Cotswold-Severn group of long barrows that spread across western Britain. What sets West Kennett apart is that you can actually walk inside it. You descend into the chalk structure itself, passing through stone-lined chambers where Neolithic families laid their dead over many generations. It's quite powerful to stand in these spaces, knowing people were doing the same five and a half thousand years ago.

The barrow overlooks open countryside with broad views across the downs, making it worth combining with a walk around the surrounding landscape. Nearby Marlborough and Avebury have all the practical things you'll need—shops, cafes, and places to stay—while West Kennett itself is just a few houses. The site costs nothing to visit and is open year-round, though you'll want proper boots if there's been rain, as the paths get muddy. If you're interested in Neolithic sites, this one deserves to be on your list.
