East Kennett Long Barrow stands just east of Avebury and is one of Britain's longest barrows of its kind.
Built over 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic period, it served as a communal burial site for early farming communities—a place of genuine importance long before Roman settlement arrived in the region. Walking along its substantial earthwork gives you a real sense of the considerable effort these ancient peoples invested in constructing such a monumental structure. The views across Wiltshire's countryside are genuinely expansive, adding to that powerful feeling of stepping back through time.
The barrow doesn't have many facilities directly on site, but it's straightforward to reach and offers an atmospheric experience that rewards a visit. It works particularly well as part of a broader exploration of the area. Avebury's famous stone circle complex is just a short drive away and makes an excellent companion site to visit on the same day. If you need refreshment afterward or want to browse independent shops, Marlborough is the nearest market town and easily accessible from here.
Standing at this ancient site, you're confronted with tangible evidence of how people thousands of years ago felt compelled to create permanent marks on the landscape. It's a powerful connection to the deep past, revealing something fundamental about human nature that persists across the millennia.
