Walking this route near Lockeridge takes you along a section of the ancient Ridgeway, one of Britain's oldest roads, where you'll encounter wide-open chalk downs and expansive views across Wiltshire.
The air feels particularly fresh up here, and there's a genuine sense of stepping back through thousands of years of history as you move across the landscape.
The real highlight is your proximity to Avebury stone circle, one of Europe's largest prehistoric monuments. As you walk the edges of the Avebury World Heritage Site, you'll get a real appreciation for the scale of the stones and the earthworks surrounding them. It's a powerful place to spend time, and you may also notice burial mounds scattered throughout the landscape, adding to the sense of age and significance.
Once you've finished your walk, Avebury village is right there, where you can grab a drink or something to eat at the pub or the National Trust cafe. If you want more choice, Marlborough is a short drive east and has a proper selection of restaurants and shops worth exploring. The walk itself isn't demanding, so it suits most fitness levels, and the combination of gentle exercise with the chance to connect with such ancient history makes it well worth doing.
