You'll find yourself walking along The Ridgeway National Trail, one of Britain's oldest routes, which runs right past Ashbury village along high ground.
This elevated pathway has been continuously used for thousands of years—traders, drovers, and countless travellers have all walked these same tracks, and that sense of connection to the past genuinely stays with you as you move through the landscape.
Most visitors come to walk sections of the trail itself. It's peaceful and quiet, away from traffic, with expansive views opening up across the Vale of White Horse and the North Wessex Downs. If prehistory interests you, you're well positioned to explore some remarkable sites nearby. The Uffington White Horse carved into the hillside is just a short detour away, as is Wayland's Smithy, a neolithic burial chamber that sits right beside the path.
Ashbury village makes a natural stopping point, with its traditional character and local facilities. For shops, services, and anything else you might need, Wantage is a straightforward drive away, and Lambourn, the racing village, is also close by. This whole area tells the story of how human activity has shaped the landscape over many centuries, offering a different perspective on the Cotswolds from the better-known parts of the region.
