A short drive east from Avebury brings you to one of Britain's most impressive Neolithic monuments.

Built around 3600 BC by early farming communities, this long barrow sits prominently on a ridge with sweeping views across the surrounding countryside, particularly towards Silbury Hill.

What makes it special is that you're not confined to viewing it from afar. You can walk along the top of the mound itself, and more remarkably, you can actually enter the cruciform chamber constructed from enormous sarsen stones. Standing inside this ancient space—which served as a collective burial ground for over a thousand years—gives you a real sense of the vast span of time involved. You begin to imagine the ceremonies and rituals that took place here across generations.

The site is completely free to visit and operates on an open-access basis, so you can spend as much or as little time here as you'd like. There's a layby on the A4 for parking, with just a short walk up to the barrow. Since you're already in the area, Avebury village and its famous stone circle are nearby and equally rewarding to visit. Silbury Hill, another remarkable prehistoric landmark, is also within easy reach, making this corner of Wiltshire particularly worthwhile if you're interested in exploring ancient Britain.
