For a journey slightly off the main Cotswolds track, you can find a truly fascinating piece of ancient history to explore on foot.

Just near the quiet village of Lockeridge, you'll discover sections of the Wansdyke, a remarkable earthwork that winds across the landscape.

This isn't your typical rolling Cotswold view, but an opportunity to walk along a substantial bank and ditch that dates back to the early medieval period, likely the 5th or 6th century. Historians believe it served as an important defensive boundary, perhaps marking the edge of different kingdoms or tribal lands. Following its course really gives you a sense of the sheer scale of ancient engineering and the long history layered into this land. It's a wonderful spot for a moderate walk, offering open countryside views and a genuine feeling of stepping back through time.

As you make your way along the quieter stretches, you can wonder about the stories this ancient boundary holds. When you're ready for something more, the world-famous Avebury stone circles are incredibly close by, making for a perfect complementary visit. The market town of Marlborough is also just a short drive away, offering plenty of places for refreshments or browsing independent shops. While technically in Wiltshire, it's easily accessible from the southern Cotswolds and connects you to an even deeper layer of England's past.
