Upper Castle Combe sits on higher ground east of the main village, straddling the B4039 road between Chippenham and Chipping Sodbury.
You'll find a quieter atmosphere up here compared to the valley below, where the famous honey-coloured stone cottages draw most of the visitors, though you're still very much part of the same remarkable community.
The entire Castle Combe area has remained virtually frozen in time since around 1600, with no new buildings added to the historic centre. This preservation gives the village an authentic medieval character that's become famous across England. The stone cottages with their steeply pitched roofs and traditional features line narrow lanes in a way that genuinely reflects how villages developed centuries ago, rather than being restored into artificial versions of themselves.
From a practical standpoint, you're well positioned for exploring the wider region. Chippenham lies about five miles south, offering shops and services, while Bath is roughly ten miles southwest if you want a day trip to experience its Georgian architecture. The village sits within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so the surrounding countryside offers excellent walking opportunities through rolling hills and farmland. The By Brook valley below is particularly pleasant for a gentle stroll, and you can easily move between the upper and lower parts of the village to experience both settings.
