Spread across 600 acres on the edge of the southern Cotswolds, you'll find a remarkable collection of trees from around the world.
It's genuinely worth spending several hours here, whether you're interested in plants or simply enjoy walking among impressive specimens. The grounds feature the Victorian-era Old Arboretum, planted with grand heritage trees, and the Silk Wood, a more informal setting of natural woodland and open glades that offers quite a different feel.
The place really shines during autumn, when the maples, oaks, and tulip trees create striking colour displays. There's also a treetop walkway that offers an unusual perspective looking down through the canopy rather than up at it. The arboretum was established in the mid-19th century by Robert Stayner Holford, a passionate collector who assembled one of the world's most significant collections of rare and unusual trees.
It works well for many different kinds of visits — a leisurely afternoon stroll, a more energetic walk, or a place to bring children to explore nature. The location is convenient too. You're just a short drive from Tetbury and Malmesbury, so it fits naturally into a broader visit to the area.
