This impressive country house stands in the Wiltshire countryside just beyond the main Cotswolds cluster, near the village of Froxfield.
Built in the 18th century for the Bruce family, Earls of Ailesbury, it represents a significant example of English architectural ambition. Lord Burlington and Roger Morris shaped its original design, with Robert Adam later adding his own refinements. The result is a classically elegant structure set within extensive grounds that really commands attention across the landscape.
As it remains a private residence, you won't be able to tour the rooms or gardens on a casual visit, and public access isn't regularly available. Very occasionally it hosts select events, but these aren't something you can count on. That said, the sheer scale and visual presence of the house makes an impression from the surrounding area, and it contributes noticeably to the character of this part of Wiltshire.
If you're exploring the area, Marlborough makes for a natural stopping point just a short drive away. It's a proper market town with decent shops and cafes, plus interesting history of its own. Hungerford is also close by and worth a visit if you're into antiques. This corner of Wiltshire offers enough to make it worth combining with a wider exploration of the region.
