The George Townhouse is a pub with rooms in Shipston-on-Stour, a working market town in the north Cotswolds that still hosts its Friday market and feels genuinely lived-in rather than designed for visitors.
It's a straightforward place to stay for a night or two, with comfortable bedrooms, a relaxed dining area, and a proper bar. The kitchen does modern takes on British classics, relying on seasonal ingredients, and there's a good range of drinks available.
Shipston itself is worth spending an hour walking around. You'll come across independent shops and cafes dotted through the town, and the buildings themselves show its history as a trading centre, with properties from different centuries reflecting centuries of commerce. The George is part of that story, a period building that's been updated with modern comfort inside.
Location-wise it works well as a base for exploring further afield. Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden are short drives if you want to see more of the region's architecture and character. Stratford-upon-Avon is close enough for a day trip if theatre appeals to you. You could easily spend a few nights here and use it to get to know this stretch of the Cotswolds without ending up in the middle of the tourist trail.
