This small village sits about three miles northeast of Northleach in the heart of the Cotswolds.

Today it's a quiet place, but Stoke Orchard holds significant wartime history that shaped the region during the Second World War. An RAF station was established here in the early 1940s, serving as a training centre for glider pilots of the Glider Pilot Regiment and RAF Regiment soldiers. The airfield later functioned as a relief landing ground, with various aircraft and gliders operating from the site throughout the war years.

If you're interested in military history, the remnants and heritage of the airfield are genuinely compelling to explore, though the site isn't formally open to the public. The landscape has transformed considerably since those days, yet the historical significance of the place still comes through. The village itself maintains the character you'd expect of a Cotswolds settlement, with stone-built architecture typical of the area.

Stoke Orchard works particularly well as part of a wider exploration of the region. Northleach, just a short distance away, has shops and pubs along with the Cotswold Wool & Weaving Museum, which gives real insight into the area's traditional industries. The nearby villages of Hampnett and Turkdean are also worth visiting. It's an accessible spot if you're keen on wartime Britain and Cotswolds countryside heritage.
