This Victorian Gothic Revival church stands out sharply against Cheltenham's predominantly Georgian and Regency buildings.

Designed by J.A. Chatwin in the late 19th century, it introduces a notably darker and more dramatic architectural character to the town centre, quite different from the classical terraces around it.

The interior rewards a closer look. The space immediately draws your eye upward through a soaring nave that creates genuine grandeur, and the stained glass deserves your attention—there are fine examples here including work by C.E. Kempe, which suffuses the church with coloured light in particularly striking ways. Because it remains an active parish church, you'll find real community life happening inside rather than the feeling of stepping into a museum.

What makes a visit straightforward is the location. Positioned right in the town centre, it fits easily into a broader exploration of Cheltenham—perhaps after a walk along the Promenade or some shopping. The building effectively demonstrates how Victorian architects approached space and light, offering an interesting contrast to the rest of what you'll encounter in this spa town. If you're thinking about how architectural styles accumulated across the Cotswolds over different periods, St Matthew's shows you that layering in tangible form.
