The collection has a particularly strong focus on Arts and Crafts work, which makes sense given the Cotswolds' central role in that movement. You'll see furniture, ceramics, metalwork and paintings from genuinely significant makers of the period, with temporary exhibitions that change regularly, so it's worth checking ahead to see what's currently showing.
The building itself is worth noticing. It occupies part of an imposing Regency structure on Clarence Street that originally served as Cheltenham's public library. During the 2010s, the whole space received a thoughtful extension and renovation that gave the collection proper room to display itself. The museum took its current name in 2013, honouring Edward Wilson, a polar explorer born in Cheltenham who accompanied Scott to Antarctica.
Being right in town centre makes it easy to combine with exploring Cheltenham's elegant Georgian streets, browsing the High Street shops, or grabbing coffee in nearby cafés. Free admission means you can be flexible—drop in for an hour if you're passing through, or stay longer without planning your whole day around it. Parking is readily available across central Cheltenham, so there's no particular hassle involved in getting there.
