Southrop is a small Gloucestershire village beside the River Leach that gives you a genuine sense of the Cotswolds without the tourist volume you'll encounter in bigger towns.

The real draw here is St Peter's Church, a Grade I listed 12th-century structure that's genuinely worth taking time to explore. Inside, you'll see medieval craftsmanship at work in the stonework and details — it's the kind of place where a slow, quiet look around reveals a lot.

The village itself is modest, built from stone cottages along lanes that gradually open into countryside. Walking is excellent here, particularly along the river and toward the twin villages of Eastleach Turville and Eastleach Martin, which are just a short walk away. The Leach Valley offers some lovely riverside paths if you enjoy that sort of rambling.

For logistics, you're well-positioned for exploring further. Fairford sits nearby with its renowned church and basic facilities, while Lechlade offers more shops and services at the meeting point of two rivers. Filkins and Hatherop are also easily accessible if you're stringing together a multi-village walking route in a single day.

Be aware that Southrop itself has no shops or pubs, so either bring food and drink with you or plan to eat and rest in one of the nearby settlements.
