Just north of Fairford in Gloucestershire, this small village sits along the River Coln and gives you a genuine sense of the Cotswolds as somewhere people actually live and work, not just somewhere to visit.
The landscape here is shaped by Hatherop Castle, a nineteenth-century Gothic Revival mansion built by the wealthy Heathcote family. It's a striking example of Victorian enthusiasm for reimagining medieval style, and though the castle itself is private, you can see its dramatic architecture from the roads around the village. St Nicholas Church is also worth stopping at if you're in the area, representing a quieter approach to Cotswolds religious buildings.
The real appeal of Hatherop comes from its riverside location. The River Coln runs through it, and you can walk along paths that follow the water and connect to wider trails through the valley. This gives you genuine countryside walking without the foot traffic you'd encounter in more popular villages. Around you are open fields and actual farming happening, which maintains that genuinely rural feel.
You wouldn't spend a full day here, but it works well as a stopping point during a longer walk or as part of exploring the Fairford area more broadly. Fairford itself is close by and has proper shops and facilities, while Hatherop offers something quieter and more grounded.
