This small village sits in the eastern Cotswolds near the Berkshire border, roughly halfway between Swindon and Newbury.

It's easy to pass through without noticing you've been there, and that's very much in keeping with Shefford Woodlands' character — the place has changed remarkably little over the centuries, with scattered stone cottages and working farmland making up the settlement.

The village gets its name from the woodland that historically blanketed much of the area, and you'll still find genuine countryside here worth exploring on foot. The landscape is rolling and open rather than dramatic, which makes it ideal for leisurely walks if you're staying in one of the larger nearby towns like Wantage or Didcot. The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin is a medieval building that speaks to the area's deep roots in agriculture.

The real appeal of Shefford Woodlands lies in its authenticity. This is a working village where people actually live their lives — you won't find tourist shops or cafes catering to visitors, but you will gain genuine insight into how Cotswolds communities operate day to day. It serves well as a peaceful base for exploring the surrounding valleys and villages, or simply as a stopping point if you're cycling or walking through the region. Its position near the Ridgeway footpath also makes it convenient for longer countryside walks.
