Wickfield is a small residential hamlet in West Berkshire, just a short distance from the market town of Lambourn.
Though often grouped with the Cotswolds region, the immediate landscape here is actually shaped by the rolling chalk downs that characterise the North Wessex Downs, giving it its own distinct feel.
You won't find specific attractions within the hamlet itself, but that's rather the point. This is a genuinely peaceful place to base yourself while exploring the extensive network of footpaths and bridleways that crisscross the surrounding countryside. Whether you're after a proper walking route or simply want to spend time in a quiet rural setting, there's plenty to discover on foot.
The wider area around Lambourn is particularly known for its equestrian traditions. The town has long been associated with horse racing, and you'll find numerous stables scattered throughout the region. This heritage gives the landscape a distinctive character if you're interested in that side of things.
Wickfield works best as a peaceful retreat rather than a destination in its own right. It gives you easy access to the charming villages and countryside of the area, making it ideal if you want to escape the bustle without venturing too far from civilisation. The chalk downland here offers something slightly different from the honeyed stone villages you find further into the Cotswolds proper.
