This small, tranquil settlement sits on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds, offering genuine peace and quiet away from the main tourist trails.
If you're after a genuine taste of rural England with minimal crowds, this is well worth considering.
The real draw here is the history. Poughley was once home to a medieval Augustinian priory, and though Poughley Priory was dissolved centuries ago and now stands largely in ruins, enough remains to give you a real sense of its monastic past. Walking around the site, you can still make out the surviving structures and it's the kind of place that naturally encourages a bit of reflection.
Most people come for the walking. The surrounding countryside is typical Cotswolds rolling farmland with big open skies, and there are plenty of field paths for a gentle wander. It's genuinely peaceful, which means you'll want to bring supplies with you since there are no shops or cafes in the hamlet itself.
When you need refreshments or a proper meal, you're well placed. Lambourn is nearby and has long been associated with horse racing, while Hungerford, the historic market town just a short distance away, offers more facilities and services. Either makes for a good base if you're planning to explore this quieter corner of the region.
