Just a short drive from Tetbury, you'll find one of the world's most important tree collections, managed by Forestry England.
With around 15,000 specimens from across the globe, including species like the Shagbark Hickory, this is a genuinely impressive destination if you're interested in seeing unusual and rare trees all in one location.
The arboretum divides into two distinct areas. The Old Arboretum showcases the collection's most impressive mature specimens arranged in a formal layout, while Silk Wood takes a more natural approach with conservation at its heart. The Treetop Walkway is probably the real highlight – it's a genuine thrill to walk through the canopy at height and see the forest from a perspective you'd normally only experience from a bird's viewpoint.
Robert Stayner Holford established the collection in the mid-1800s, driven by his passion for exotic plants. It's evolved into a serious research and conservation centre, though it works just as well as a place to wander for a few hours without any particular agenda. The grounds are particularly striking in autumn when the colours really come alive.
There's a visitor centre and café on site, and the location works well as a day out whether you're based near Tetbury or Malmesbury. You can make it as relaxing or as energetic as you fancy – it all depends on what kind of visit you're after.
