Saltmarsh occupies a prime spot in the centre of Stow-on-the-Wold, one of the Cotswolds' most established market towns.
It's an independent shop that rewards a proper browse, stocking the kind of things that actually mean something – distinctive gifts, interesting books, local crafts, and homewares with real character rather than the mass-produced feel you find everywhere else. These are items that tend to stay with you long after you've left.
Stow itself has genuine history running through it. The town grew wealthy on the wool trade, and you can still trace that story in the wide Market Square, which once hosted major trade fairs. Beyond Saltmarsh, the whole town is dotted with independent shops, proper pubs, and cafes worth ducking into, and the Market Square itself repays a slow wander around its edges.
What makes Stow particularly useful is how well it connects to other places worth visiting. You're only a short drive from Bourton-on-the-Water, Moreton-in-Marsh, or the Slaughters, so it works well as part of a broader Cotswolds route. Saltmarsh fits naturally into that picture – just another good reason to spend an hour or two exploring the town centre.
