Up on a rise overlooking the Evenlode Valley, this village gives you a real sense of how the Cotswolds have evolved over centuries.
The buildings are largely constructed from local honey-coloured stone, giving them that warm character you'll find throughout the region. Most visitors come for Bourton House Garden, a three-acre space that's been thoughtfully designed and well maintained. You'll find carefully planted borders, water features, and an impressive ancient tithe barn within the grounds. If you're interested in gardens, it's definitely worth planning a visit, though check opening times first as it doesn't open daily.
The village itself is worth exploring at a relaxed pace. St. Lawrence Church dates back centuries and has a Norman tower, with a peaceful churchyard that offers views across the surrounding landscape. Wander through the lanes, take in the traditional architecture, and appreciate the calm atmosphere that comes with a place that isn't overwhelmed by tourism. When you want more options for shops and restaurants, Moreton-in-Marsh is just a short drive away and has a train station if you're arriving by rail. Broadway, another popular Cotswolds destination, is similarly close if you want to see more of the wider area. What you experience here is genuine rural English life without the constant flow of visitors.
