You'll find Roundhouse Lake just outside Lechlade, a working market town sitting on the Thames, and it's genuinely one of those places where you can spend a couple of hours without feeling rushed.
The lake came into being through gravel extraction, but nature has taken over completely—it's now a proper nature reserve with real character and wildlife throughout.
Most people come for a straightforward walk around the shoreline, and birdwatchers particularly rate it. You'll see different waterfowl and wading birds depending on what time of year you visit, but even if birds aren't your thing, there's something genuinely restorative about the sound of reeds and watching how the wind moves across the water. The whole place has a settled, peaceful quality that works well if you need a break from heavier sightseeing.
Lechlade itself deserves proper attention once you've finished at the lake. As the highest navigable point on the River Thames, it has that working riverside atmosphere with decent cafes and pubs dotted around. If you want to venture a bit further, Fairford is very close and has an impressive church worth seeing, while Burford sits further north and offers more of that stronger Cotswolds character you might be after. It's a good area for combining a quiet nature walk with some proper exploration without having to drive very far.
